Amgen Announces Award for Science Teaching Excellence; First Year Focusing on Science Teaching

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan 14, 2002 -- Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) announced today it is launching the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence, its first recognition program for science education. One K-12 educator who teaches in either public or private schools in the Jefferson County school district will receive an unrestricted $10,000 award check from Amgen, and will be honored at an award dinner in May.

For five years, Amgen has conducted the Amgen Award for Teacher Excellence in Jefferson County. This year´s award marks a fundamental change in the program, focusing solely on excellence in science teaching.

Anyone can nominate an educator who teaches science. The nomination letter should include: the full name of the teacher; the name and address of the school; the name of the school district; the school´s phone number; the grade level the science teacher teaches; the nominator´s relationship to the science teacher; the nominator´s phone number; and a description of why the science teacher deserves the award. Letters should be sent to: Amgen´s Award for Science Teaching Excellence, Amgen Inc., 12000 Plantside Drive, Louisville, KY 40299. Nominations can also be submitted electronically, at Nominations for the award will be accepted immediately, through February 28, 2002.
